For most bloggers, the purpose of setting up a website/blog is to make money from it.

Businesses typically set up an eCommerce website, and from that they sell products and services.

It’s easier to set up a website/blog to sell your products and services as opposed to an eCommerce site.

There are a range of methods below that allow beginner bloggers the opportunity to monetize your website/blog.

Is it possible to make money with your blog?

Before we look at the different options available, I want to answer this very important question.

Many new Internet Marketers who build a new website/blog want it to make them money.

It is worth pointing out that almost any type of website/blog has the potential to make money.

However, there are many factors that determine the actual earning potential of a website/blog, but almost all of them have the potential to generate income.

What are the different options to monetize your blog?

As I mentioned, there are a lot of different ways to monetize a website/blog.

Just before we look at them, the most important thing to understand is generating “one-time sales” versus passive income.

Let’s take a look at the differences as it is crucial to fully understand these two monetization methods.

My Best Methods To Make Money Blogging

Passive Income

The simplest way to understand passive income is to consider this: If you wrote a book, that is a one-time activity.

You do a piece of work one time and it is is finished.

Your book will continue to sell for many years and generate passive income.

That means it will generate sales without you having to do anything else.

If you think of artists who produce a piece of music, that is how this model works.

One-Time Sales

If you create a website that sell services to a local businesses, then you will only get paid when they purchase one of your services.

For example, a local business hired you to create a business plan for them, and paid you one-time only.

The only way you can make money is to do more business plans for more businesses, and that means doing more work!

There is a very big difference between the two methods of generating an online income with a website/blog.

In some cases, you can have a mixture of both earned and passive income.

8 Methods Of Monetizing

This list shows the seven most popular methods for generating income from your website/blog:

  1. Product | Service Sales
  2. Membership Websites
  3. Selling Your Own Information Products
  4. Consulting | Coaching
  5. Advertising
  6. Sponsored Posts | Product Reviews
  7. Flip Websites
  8. Affiliate Marketing

Product | Service Sales

If you have a product or service that you want to sell, then build an eCommerce website.

You can also build a normal website to sell a product or service, and add elements such as a shopping cart, checkout and payment options.

All of the bigger, medium and small sized businesses hire a professional to do it.

eCommerce is also a very popular choice with many micro home based and craft businesses, too.

It depends on the amount of products or services that you are selling.

This type of website is a lot of work and require regular updating of products.

Membership Websites

With this method, you can set up a website that offers free information to people interested in a particular subject such as “learning Russian.”

You can have a paying member’s section where they can get more detailed content.

Typically, this is a monthly subscription.

It allows you to earn a steady monthly income stream.

The downside of an eCommerce website/blog is having all of the work done and setup, which is expensive.

And, it is a one-time activity.

The other downside is that members will come and go, so you need to work at attracting new members.

Information Products

This monetization method has grown in popularity.

The selling of knowledge is a huge industry.

The principle behind this method is to build up your authority in a particular market.

Then, sell quality information to that market.

For most website/blog owners, this information is produced in various formats such as:

⦁ eBooks
⦁ Audio
⦁ Videos
⦁ Webinars
⦁ A combination of all of the above.

If you are the author and own the product, then keep 100% of the profit.

You can also ask other people to promote your product and share the revenue with them.

Like the membership method, get all of the work done once.

After that, focus on promoting your website/blog.

Consulting | Coaching

Similar to the method above, this one is about establishing yourself in the marketplace.

In essence, use your website/blog to build up your reputation in the marketplace.

Quite often this is referred to as building your brand and attracting an interested audience.

You can then monetize your website/blog by offering services to offline businesses.

For example, you can own a website/blog that shows small businesses in your local area how to set up a website, use Facebook etc. for free.

You can also offer these services to them for a fee.

This is often referred to as local consulting, and can be quite a lucrative way of earning money.

The downside is that you always need to find work and it is almost always a new activity.

Therefore, passive income is not really an option with this method.

A favorite method for many bloggers is to sell advertising and sponsored posts on their website/blog.

This is the first method that many new bloggers start with.

I used this method with my blog and highly recommend it.

It is also the simplest method of monetization, but your website/blog must be professional and have a media kit.

With this monetization method, concentrate on writing good quality content.

That will begin to attract visitors to your website/blog.

Once that happens, begin to place ads that are relevant to your content.

There are various network advertising opportunities such as:

  • Google Adsense
  • Other networks when you have more traffic

You may also be contacted by advertisers who will pay to place banner advertisements on your website.

You get paid when someone clicks one of the banners.

This method really only works well when you have a large number of page views.

And, it is passive income.

Flip Websites

Another popular method to create an income online is to build websites and sell them for a profit.

This is essentially a trading marketplace.

There is always a demand from people who want to buy a website where most of the work has been done, and it’s making money.

In this monetization method, build a website and do all of the technical set up with domain name, hosting and content.

At that stage you can flip the website for a profit.

The downside of this is that you constantly need to build new websites.

If you don’t, then you have nothing to sell.

Affiliate Marketing

Last but not least is Affiliate Marketing and it is my favorite method.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money blogging.

With this method, you offer other people’s products on your website/blog, and get paid when visitors buy a product.

In essence, write about something that you have an interest in, recommend a relevant product or service to your visitors, and include an affiliate link.

You can see this method on Rural Money.

This is what is called true passive income.

Write one piece of content and when visitors come to your website, they read it and a percentage of them will click your affiliate link and buy the product.

Notice on my website/blog that I use Amazon Associates as my affiliate partner.

I have also included some Google Adsense ads as they neatly fit in with the structure of the site.

I do not use a lot of ads as they can be very distracting from your content.

In conclusion, these are the main methods of monetizing a website/blog.

The one you decide to use depends on the type of online business that you want.

My preference is an Amazon Associates affiliate website/blog, because I find it to be the easiest method to make money blogging.

I have also discovered that Amazon is excellent at converting visitors into buyers.

When you add some Google Adsense ads, it can generate two very good methods of passive income, until you have more traffic.
